[English version below]
[English]
The lanterns shown by mikethestove und Tjerk are ALG No. 7, formerly used by the French national railways SNCF to provisionally secure level crossings. The red light was meant for street traffic. Therefore, the lanterns have the additional cover to prevent the light being seen by approaching trains (train drivers misinterpreting it as a railway signal would initiate emergency braking).
Earlier lanterns have a corrugated tank (as the one by mikethestove), the additional glass protection cage often has three wires, early lanterns can even come with an ALG embossed glass. Newer ones show a smooth tank (as the one by Tjerk) and glass protection cages with two wires, ocssionally they come with plastic filler caps. On the bottom, they usually show the normal "Guillouard Nantes" stamping, but there also are some with "SNCF" stamping.
All that I've seen up to now have the glass lever on the left side and show the round ALG logo on the tank. A very rough estimate of the production period(s) would therefore be the late 1950s at the earliest to possibly the 1970s or later.
