is this a Coleman double tie mantle?
this looks interesting - is that the lantern in question? -
E-mail pelam with a question if they have it in stock
they might have it
if they dont please send me a PM -
Hi,
A picture is worth a 100o words - but usually the Swiss army lantern is 250cp
(using a bigger fount/tank).
The part 33 is not compatible between 250 and 350
I dont know why its not in the catalog. -
I do use 500cp mantles on 350cp lanterns as the expand less the are less sensitive to travel and hold better
the will be a bit denser on 350cp then on 500cp but could be used without any problem.
cant comment on the Pelam mantles as I never used them -
Hi,
Had a conference out of town today in Tel-aviv I always take that rare chance and hop to the big flee market nearby
There were a lot of things there more lanterns then I could afford but at least picked up two - this is the second - a petromax 833 made in Argentina
payed way to much for it but from my memory there was something with the number and unless updated the PLC marked it as table lamp
all parts are original except the inner hood and looks like the pump and pump bore were replaced ,might replace it back with one from a petromax but the solder work looks rather good
the hood suffered a lot of damaged but I might selvage the upper part as it say Argentina on it
and the fount stamp say "registrada industria argentina" as on the name plate
how common are these? an when were they made and bu whom?
pics all marked parts -
Thanks Jonas
Now I need to get me that third variation on the 828
Do you know years of production? -
I have two types of 828 the "Zicke" and the "regular" both having the rocker pre-heater valve (or whatever it is called) and both have "special" glass
here:
and -
interesting fact, I have founf my third petromax 828 from the 50's localy and all of them have a petromax special Jenaer Duran glass
here is a pic
this one is marked due to heat from a broken mantleand back to topic the 1500 set as a lantern and some atmosphere pics
-
Thanks Jonas,
So now I see mine is a modern replacement from Pelam (nice anyway)
The only way to get an original is either find one or sandblast an old original globe -
Another question on the same topic - what was the original globe on these?
clear or partly frosted.
What I have now is what I think to be a pelam globe "Glas vertical beamless HK350/500 " -
Just wanted to share my latest acquisition
looked a long time for one for a reasonable price - and they fetch quite a high price on ebay.
this time one of the US based friends helped me out here.
I have a question here - the lantern works great and has a very nice blue flame,
my question is some of the flame (blue flame) is visible above the upper part
what I mean is that if I put a pot on the stove frame flame will touch it.
also the ceramic burner and mixing tube are glowing red - but not the U tube
is that normal behavior for it?
I hope you can see it in the last pic -
OK -got more info.
before going and taking the lantern apart, try to pre-heat twice and see if it happens.
but this time just pump one or two strokes and see in the mantle starts to light dimly.
and increasing pressure very slowly.
I understand you are in Holland? -
That is strange,
first question are using petrol/gasoline or kerosene/paraffin?
you should use only kerosene in the lantern.
second did you start with just a few strokes before going to full pressure?
sounds like the lantern was not hot enough from the pre-heating, what is the outside temperature?
btw having two lanterns new havinf the same problem is very odd, what brand in the lantern? -
Hi, you can order the part from the shop in which this forum is hosted under.
Does your lantern have a alcohol pre-heating cup?
if so you could bypass the problem, instead of pre-heating using the torch you can pre-heat using alcohol.
light the alcohol and let it heat the lantern, just when alcohol is starting to run out you can start pumping the lantern will light and will not burst in flame and you can start building pressure as the lantern heats up.
the design on the fuel shut off valve inside the tank is not perfect and could get stuck but that problem could be bypassed.
also it is not usually used for turnnig off the lantern but by releasing the pressure. -
This one is surely worth restoring
a very nice old sample of petromax quality -
you should fix the issue if you want the lantern to work exactly as intended
do you use alcohol for pre-heating or the rapid heater?
if you use alcohol you can keep the valve open and start pumping just as the alcohol is almost completed.
BTW - you should use kerosene/paraffin in the lantern and noT petrol/unleaded fuel much safer that way!! -
Thanks guys!!

what you have there is a PL53
the difference between the PL53 and PL55 is the tank size
while 53 has a 1.5pint tank the 55 has a 2.5pint tank.
The steel PL53 was produced from approximately 1938 to after the war
This could have been produced specify for a military purpose,
as the same brass PL53 produced in tandem for the general public, -
Hi All,
I wanted to receive more info on the lantern,
found this on a trip to Bulgaria in a junk shop and paid only 15 euros for it
As far as I know (after some research) its the only one looking exactly like this
its should be from around 1940's - same model exists but in nickel plating and red knobs
any more info will be apriciated
condition found:
after cleanup
and of course burning using a pmax 250cp jet and needle (only thing replaced)
thanks
