Hi,
to answer your first question - all lanterns pulsate, some do it quick so you cant notice some do pulsate a bit even at peek performance
if its only a slight pulse and you made sure all is tight and there are no air leaks and the distance is adjusted - could be just the the pulse that lantern has
if its not very annoying leave it.
as for the mantle if you dont see a flame outside the mantle (like a halo) after burning for 10min then it is the right size, mantles shrink a lot after burning
if you use a small mantle on a 500cp lantern then you will see a halo around the mantle.

that will be hard without an image

Why not soldering?
soft lead soldering using a small torch will be fine in my opinion
the tank has no pressure and it wont get hot enough to melt the solder
and it its on the bottom it doesn't have to be super nice -
Hi Franco
you have found a very good little lantern and complete with the additional shade that is a good find.
I have started with Coleman as well and for a long time was reluctant to look at other brands, but today I must admit I like them all!
true a petromax is more complicated then a Coleman but still a very good strong light.
some answers/comments:
1st - the pump or at least the pump knob is from another lantern as you can
read the original should have petromax written on it and is smaller.
2nd- this lantern does not have a positive shut off valve like a Coleman it's shut off using a spring loaded valve in the bottom of the fuel pick up tube you should turn it off by releasing the pressure using the pressure release knob on the filler cap
3rd - the lantern looks to be from the 50's that is from the pre-heater mechanism and from the stamp "made in Germany"
4th - when you turn the valve wheel dose the needle appear in the jet? if so all is ok
5th- check the distance between the jet and the U-tube it should be 12mm
if all is well I would give it a good cosmetic clean up - fill it up with kero and try to light it
running a lantern on kerosene is much safer then Coleman fuel as its a less volatile fuel and if it leaks you will only have a mess and not a ball of file
if you have more questions you are more then welcome -
Hi Karli
Thanks for the answer - so Santrax is the official manufacture of the petromax brand.
can some give some light on the evolution of the brand name itself ? -
My I ask what is the updated information?

Hi All,
We are doing some research on made in England Coleman's
if you have one please let us know and specify model number, date of manufacture and if you have papers or box , we would like to know factory name and address as well
Thank you all for your help -
Hi
here is the picture of the cup:
The alcohol preheat is demonstrated on the left and the internal kerosene torch is shown on the right.
it should be connected by the frame screw and should sit next to the carburator. -
Hi Paul
Your lantern should have a pre-heater cup
you could use it to warm up the lantern instead of the blow-torch pre-heater.
What you do is fill the cup with alcohol and light it. the bottle is used to reach the bowl through the opening in the frame
it will be sufficient to warm up the lanterns.
when to use is up to you
if you dont want to carry additional alcohol with you use the tourch if you dont mind this is a quiter way to warm up the lantern without the pressure loss.
both ways are fine and could be used. what ever you prefer. -
Hi all
I know this is a loaded discussion and I know a lot of users in Germany use gasoline in petromax type lanterns
I know it would work and work well
but in my opinion doing so in an unmodified lantern (replacing the carborator is not what I mean by modified)
these lanterns have no positive shut off and have a pressure release valve both are very dangerous when using gasoline.
and the matter of no fail safe check valve
checkvalves could fail and when leaking kerosene there is no issue but when leaking gasoline and gasoline fumes that could be extrimly dangerous!!
I heard some users have modifications for those - like special valves etc I will be glad to hear about them -
Now we see it burning - nice work
-
the #21 is a good option
I think the #20 will be even better fit as its a 200cp mantle
as for the unimet as far as I remember it was made in Hong Kong by Union Metal Works
and most of them were clones of others like Petromax, Coleman and tilley -
What do you mean by adjust the rubber?
dose it have the O-ring type pump on this one? -
Hi
these are very bright and the 1500 is 500cp lantern
the found would get hot so no worries.
if you can still touch it and not get burnt -
it should also have a model number i.e
1250,1350 or 1500 -
That numbers are relevant for lanterns from the 1960's
as this one looks older because of the pre-heater knob
the lantern should be from the 1950's
what model is it? -
you can find a lot of info here:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/munwai/homepage.htm
also a picture of the lanter will help in dating -
there are acrylic or sort tank sealers that could be used to seal tanks
if I remember correctly one of them is POR15
but any other will do. -
Still a very nice find
now we would like to see it burning -
very nice find of a very looked for lantern
waiting to see the "after" pictures
