Nice job!!! ....brass fount looks the business....Dont have a Tilly as yet....need to get one me thinks
Have you seen that new Vapalux site in the UK???
-
Hi Fox thank you very much for the compliement when you do get a Tilley the older models like the 246 Guardsman or the 246A were a better quality and made lantern than the modern day 246B and in my opinion the they look better, when i stripped this lantern down to restore it i noticed that the tank was heavier as the tank brass is of a thicker gauge brass.
another thing i like aabout this model is that the pump and controlcock is all so made of brass where as the 246B these parts are made of alluminium alloy,
the next Tilley stormlight/outdoor lamp i would like to get if i can find one cheap is the PL53 maade from the 1930's-40's

good job
a guardsman was my first tilley, a nearly undestructable one -
Hi Martin thank you very much i agree the Guardsman is very robust and almost indestructable and so much better made compared with the model of today

Hi Brian, you sure have made a nice job of that 246, is that a new top or do you have some sort of heat proof paint that holds its color after heating, enjoyed the before and after, cheers Frank.
-
the guardsman has some brown enamel on the hood, no paint, so it is difficult to repair.
mine has some deep chips or whatever, which show the heavy wear of the lamp. -
Peer /Martin
I will be given English lessons every Wednesday night from 8-9pm in the collectors section for a very small fee of 20eur
-
haha you sure that this is no brain-washing to get our masterpiece polished petromax lamps ?
-
You are correct!...I am ashamed
Maybe it will work on Peer he has to many lamps
-
Hi Lampies many thanks for all your kind compliements hi aussie bloke you are correct i have re coated the burner hood with high tempreture paint,as over 50% of the original brown enammel had been worn/chipped off and the bare metal had a lot of rust on it so i had no choice but to paint it to make it look a lot better and preserve the hood tha paint is supose to with stand tempreture up to 650 degres celcious but on the manufactures instructions it says it need to be built up to that tempreture gradualy as the paint will sofften and blister which is perfect for a wood/coal stove what this brand of paint was made for as these stoves take a good while to heat up to full tempreture.
The Tilley lamp hood will heat up very quicklie with sthe spirit cup burning with meths so i got the blistering on the burner hood but the paint is still intact and will now work and protect the burner hood but it is not perfect i dont think nothing could beat a enammeled or chrome finish on thsese hoods i would like to come accross a small enammeling kiln that is cheap and have a go at re enammeling it that would be perfect

Hi Brian.
First class work!!!
It's hard to believe it's the very same lantern. You can only top it off if you have the vent re-enamelled. It's not very expensive and would make it a very special piece. Is there any company around who could do the job?
I think I'll have some of my Coleman vents re-enamelled soon.
Greetings, Erwin. -
Hi Erwin thank you very much it would fantastic if i could get the hood/vent re enamelled it would be a far superior finish and it realy would set it off but i dont know any where localy where they do re enamelling
-
Brian
not sure bout UK...but there is a guy in US who is top notch at it and most of the guys in the CCF send their stuff to him...a vent should be cheap enough to post over!
