Home made Aladdin mantle making
by Wim van der Velden on Thu Feb 26, 2009 7:11 pm
Finally we got an article, where all the others ???
Qiu Jing Sheng made an article about mantle making for aladdin lamps. Trevor Emmens helped with the translation.
We hope everybody respects the copyright.
Qiu Jing Sheng and Trevor Emmens THANK YOU

Home Made Mantles
## Bild 1
Edited by Trevor Emmens from original material by Col. Seksan (Qiu Jing Sheng) and Mr. Samran
This article is developed from a presentation sent to me by Col. Seksan (Qiu Jing Sheng) from
Thailand, and explains how to adapt a pressure lantern mantle for use on an Aladdin lamp.
As Aladdin mantles now cost around $10 in the USA and £11 in the UK, versus less than $1 for
pressure lamp mantles, this could be a very useful and money saving idea. The technique was
developed by Mr. Samran of the Aladdin Collector Group in Petchaburi, Thailand.
As I have not tried this technique myself, any questions about the procedure should be addressed
to Qiu Jing Sheng. This method could possibly also be used to make Famos
mantles.

How Does It Work?
The basic method is to mount a pressure lantern mantle on an old Aladdin mantle base. This is then
mounted in the pressure lantern where the mantle would normally fit, and is burnt off in the lantern.
Equipment Required
1. An old Aladdin mantle base.
## Bild 3
2. A large pressure lantern where the vapouriser tube curves over in an inverted U at the top and the
burner nozzle hangs down. These normally use a closed sock mantle. It will not work with lamps
where the vapouriser tube goes through the mantle into the burner, such as Tilley and BiAladdin
lamps, which are probably too small anyway.
3. Double tie pressure lantern mantles open at both ends.

4. Soft iron wire about 1mm diameter.
5. Some hand tools, pliers, cutters, scissors.
Procedure
1. Remove the wire frame from the mantle base and make a wire ring that will sit in the groove round
the bottom of the mantle base.

2. Remove the ties from the top and bottom of the mantle.
3. Spread the bottom of the mantle over the base and fix it in place with the ring of iron wire.

4. Tie off the top of the mantle with about 5 turns of iron wire.

5. Fix the mantle base over the burner nozzle of the pressure lantern with the mantle hanging down
and secure in place with iron wire.

6. Light the lantern and replace the inner top cover. The mantle will expand under the pressure of the
hot gases and burn off. Turn the fuel control up and down quickly to expand the mantle.

7. Leave to burn for 15 to 20 minutes until the mantle is fully expanded, then turn off the lantern and
allow to cool.
8. Carefully remove the mantle from the lantern, and trim off the top with the wire ring. You will be
left with a self supporting mantle that can be used in your Aladdin lamp.
