    Ok very good.

How much citric acid do you normally use per liter of water and what is the procedure when you use it?

I know some people boil the parts in a citric acid mix. Do you do this? And for how long if you do?

    Hi All

I have found an Optimus 930 that I will be fixing up over the coming weeks.

I have restored quite a few lanterns in my time, but I have never done one that looks quite like this on the tank and hood.

Any tips on cleaning based on the picture?

    Citric acid perhaps?

    Thanks in advance?

    Br Casper

Thank you - I actually think it was a pretty good job myself :-)

NOS... Well I consider that as a compliment to my restauration :-) They were bought from an elderly couple in the countryside not far from where I live for 16 Euro. The woman could remember that her grandparents had used them in or just after the 2nd world war - and she could remember that he hung them on the same spot I took them down from in the barn of the family farm when he could not get them to work anymore.

Nice lanterns and a nice story :D

    Hi all

I have now received the spare parts and the "twin"lanterns works great - but as said here on the forum: "if there are no pictures it DID NOT happen" :-) So here they are.

Image 1: Here you can see the lanterns before restauration - not in a good shape. The right one is missing the glass and the tank filler cap but apart from that they were complete. If anyone has a spare tankfiller cap they would like to sell please let me know :-)

image 2: Here are the twins fully restored and with stickers I drew in adobe illustrator from the original ones and got printed on silk matt stickers. Not original I know but it was the best I could do since the tanks had to get re-painted. Image is also a bit skewed from the lens - it's not the lantern :-)

    image 3 - a close-up of a sticker.

Well this was all from me - have a nice evening everyone

    Hi Bjørn

Ok great - I just completed the payment for the parts so now I am just waiting for them to arrive :-)

Ahh yes that is true regarding the link... I will remember this in the future..

By the way - a bit off topic for this thread: Will there be any meetings/arrangements for lantern enthusiasts soon near DK? I have searched in DK but have not found anyone planning anything. And most of the people I know finds this hobby mostly strange so it would be nice to meet fellow lantern-lovers in person :-) :prost:

    Dear Leuchtkraft

Now I am in doubt... I thought item "th-500" in the pelam web shop contained thorium?

Luxor - ok I will try that. For the older Petromax mantles - could you be a bit more specific on that - any specific looking bag these mantes are put in, made before a certain year..?

    BR Casper

    Hi all

When reading older posts the general impression is that Peerless Mantles are the best - however I find these quite hard to come by.. ?? Most of the shops I can find are in the US and will not ship to europe.

So my question is: Are the thorium mantles here from the Pelam shop just as good? :fechten:

    Thank you in advance.

Now I have soldered the hole in the bottom of the tank

Afterwards I tested the lantern - it is now tight - but the same problem exists as with the other lantern. They simply burn too rich, but burns almost perfectly when I place the nipple in top position into the nozzle. So the nozzles are worn out - and actually it is clear just when looking at the nozzles. The holes are too big and also alsmost elliptical in shape.

So now I have ordered nipples and nozzles from www.hasag.info and I hope they will fit even though they are ment for Hasag 551 - anyone have tested this?

    BR Casper

    Dear All

I changed the nozzle with the nozzle from the other Hasag - and this seems to have helped. It should be said that the two nozzles are not identical, and I suspect that the first one I tried is not meant to be used with this lantern. However now when the mantle was not one big "sea of flames" I of course added more preasure and what happens...

Nooo - kereosene was seeping from out below the tank. I dismantled the lantern and preasure tested it under water AGAIN and yes.... A TINY hole in the bottom of the tank where preasure was just happily bubbling away. It was not there when I preasure tested under water before I started it up.. So once again it was one of the areas with very thin material thickness that gave in when higher preasure was inside the tank. Sadly I did not discover that area

So now I have to remove the paint in the damaged area and get it fixed - then afterwards I will try one again.

    Arrrgh :wallbash:

Yes that was what I thought as well - that it should be able to run on kerosene..

    I have been thinking:

Is it possible that the small hole in the nozzle has been "expanded" by frequent use of the needle - making the kerosene/air mix too "rich"

I have a plan to take the nozzle from the other one and mount it this evening. If this clears up the problem then that should be the issue.

By the way: Where could I find a new nozzle for the 351L if this is the problem?

    BR Casper

    Hello Viking

My versions are black were painted 351L from original and I can tell you that they were NOT made of brass :-). I can upload pictures when I get home so you can see the original with all their rust. Perhaps the black version were made of cheaper material since they should be painted black??

I can also tell you that I bought the lanterns from and elderly married couple who's family has lived on the same farm for generations. The wife told me that the lanterns were bought by her grandfather some time during the 2nd world war and that was why he chose the black painted versions so there were no reflections from chrome or brass. Resistance people with lanters or some other story springs to mind...?? I dont know, but it was fun to take them down from their resting place in the barn where they has been hanging on the same two nails since shortly after the war :-)

And to a fellow Dane: Halløj Sønder Omme med hilsner fra Aalborg :-)

    BR Casper

    Thank you for your answers.

I have a couple of follow-up questions since I have always used Kerosene burning lanters and these are my first benzin burning lanters:

    1) Should I use high or low octane benzin?
    2) Should I buy a Lead additive and add to the un-leaded benzine (Like you do with some vintage mopeds etc.) And how much should be added pr liter?
    3) Should I use a special mantle (finer threads or other)??
    3) You write that it should be able to run on kerosene as well but from what I have found yesterday that is not the case - even with double or tripple pre-heating. Should it really be able to run on kerosene and what could I be doing wrong if not the pre-heating? For your reference I can tell you that I have used a 500cp mantle from a Pelam spare part kit.

    Thank you again :-)

    Dear All

I recently found 2 pcs of Hasag 351L for the bargain of 16 Euro :-)

Unfortunately the tanks were completely eaten away by rust, big holes in the
bottoms, in top and side of tanks plus areas with so thin metal that is it
broke when you touched the tank. So I had to get them repaired and painted with
heat resistant paint even though I like the original look best. But ok - they
will never get to work again if I did nothing so I did.The first on is now completely ready to run - and in fact I started it up
yesterday but here the problems begin:

It burns with large flames around the wick so now I am starting to wonder:

    1) I used Kerosene/Petroleum but is this lantern actually for Benzin? It says
"Für spiritus" but I thought that indicated that Alcohol should be
used for pre-heating as normally in lanterns. But does Spiritus mean anything
else in german? Could not find a translation of “Spiritus” to either Benzin or
    Kerosene/Petroleum….?

    2) I
pre-heat with the needle up ( should the “lid” above the pre-heater cup be in
to or low position when pre-heating), light it just when the pre-heater cup is
about to burn out by turning the knob down (needle down) and then it lights –
but with many flames around the mantle. It actually burns better when I turn
the needle up again?? But still with flames around the mantle.

    It should
be said that I of course have tested the lamp in preasurized state under water
and it is tight – and furthermore the distance from the nozzle to the mixing
tube is fixed on this lantern, so it is not because of tightness problems or to
    rich a kerosene/petroleum and air.

    I have read
something about that the needle should be down when pre-heating, turned up 1
minute before pre-heater is burned out, and lighted with the needle up…?? And
that these Hasag lanterns should be preassurized very slowly compared to the
Petromax lanterns– and that this could be the problem??

    So I am somewhat
confused.. If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you in advance :-)

    Hi again Peer

Yes I will of course exchange all washers, seals ect. to new ones, as I normally do when restauring a lantern. I am thinking about finding som lead plate and knock out lead seals myself since I cannot find them anywhere :-). In my opinion lead washers a much better than rubber ones in the bottom of the pump house and where you connect the vaporizer rod to the tank.

Now I am clear what you mean about the pre-heating. Personally I have always just pre-heated 1 time with the spirit-cup on my lanterns using kerosene - and this has never caused me any problems. Why do you pre-heat 2 times with kerosene?

I am glad that I can run the 1051 on regular kerosene without any problems and modifications - I must say that it is the fuel I feel the best about :-)

Thank you for the link - I think I also will be buying the "Spreizfeder für Pumpenleder inkl. Mutter M5 metrisch

" for some of my lanters. It seems like a good accesory :-)

    BR Casper

    Dear Peer

Thank you for your answer. But just to be clear on your answer:

    1) So the lantern needs no modifications to burn with kerosene/petroleum? No alternative nozzle and needle with different size? Because the pre-heater on the 1051 seems to be different than the normal spirit cup used on Petromax ect. (A bit hard to evaualte the pre-heater only from low-res pictures)

    2) You write "Please remember that the lantern you need more then just warm up with spirit." I am a bit unclear on this sentence. Do you mean that I need to pre-heat additionally or in a different way for this lantern than for the regular kerosene lanterns?

    3) Where can i buy the Viton seals - and additionally where can I buy the lead washers originally used? Because now from Pelam.de they send rubber ones in the spare kits.

And yes - any fuel is hazardous - I gues I am just more used to kerosene/petroleum.:-)

    BR Casper

    Hello all

The other day I found an old blue Primus 1051 online where only the glalss was missing for 26 Euro - so I bought it and eagerly await its arrival (Any man should buy a Christmas presentfor himself I think :-))

Meanwhile I have done some research and found out that this model is designed to work with gasoline and not kerosene.

I have to say that this makes me a bit nerveus since I only have experience with the kerosene burning lanterns and consider gasoline much more flammable and potentially more dangerous... But is this concern uncalled for??

Does any of you guys have experience with the Primus 1051 or gasoline burning presseure lanterns in general that could set my mind at ease? And do you have any general hints that are important for these types of lanters that are different from the kerosene burning lanters (I have a lot of experience restauring and using the kerosene burning lanterns so advise does not need to be given at beginner level :-))

Or as an alternative - Is it possible to burn kerosene in this lantern instead without any modifications? - and if any modifications are needed - please specify which ones.

Thank you in advance and a Merry Christmas to you all! :nikolaus:
