stress cracks

  • Hi All
    I have a question
I have been warned not to use chemicals in brass founts/tank and it can cause stress cracks
I have seen stress cracks myself till now only on Coleman lanterns with brass founts
Do any one of you had any problems with the different models of Petromax or they are not sensitive to stress cracks? ?(

    Thank you all :hail:

  • Hi,

I never had problems with stress cracks at Coleman lanterns.
But the most of us know, that the AIDA model 214 has problems,
the Standard 2045 with a brass fount and a AGM model (typ unknown) have stress cracks.
And I am having a MIL SPEC, built in 1944, company???, which has cracks. All these lanterns are in my little collection.

  • Hi Steelkingdom,
Caustic Soda (in german called Natronlauge) is able to solve the zinc of the brass. I'm not sure about the penetration deepth, but i can still imagine that a long exposition time can damage the brass (may be ? ).
