Hi guys no offence taken its all great fun i must admit even though i am english i am not the greatest of writing lol,my main collection is of classic camping stoves, i have three lanterns at present a tilley guardsman which is in the post from a ebay seller, so thats the bialaddin and tilley which are shown on here a petromaxHk500 i brought from the petromax main site a tilley guardsman once it arrives the petromax is in parts for the last couple of years as i had to strip it down beacause it started to run bad very dim and flames comming from out of the mantle i will get around to restoring it shortly

i have a bialaddin bowlfire i am serviceing at the moment just waiting on a set of viton seals to arrive i will upload some images of that shortly

    Hi Brian,
interesting lamp, althoug it is a bit hard to read your post. (and not because of the accent ;) )
It sounds a bit like a robot... :D

Back to the lamp, is the vaporizer longer than normal?
Did they mix up parts from other lampmodels for this one?

    Best regards, Björn

Hi Bjorn no all they did was change the spigot on the upper burner the piece that goes over the vapouriser just so a larger mantel can be fitted the vapouriser,it is a standard 606 vapouriser that fits all tilley storm lamps which is five inches in length/about 127mm

Hi this tilley 246B 500 series is abit different to the standard 246 as it has a longer burner spigot so a larger mantle so a larger mantle could be fitted this was a feature by tilley to increase the candle power there the only difference in this lantern is as mentioned above the spigot is longer and a larger mantle is used i was told by a collector that it was a bit of a con as the pressure had to be increased to around 45psi in stead of about 30psi, to be honest it is only a bit brighter than the standard 246B and quite badly engineered as the tank was not updated to cope with the extra pressure and some of the tank bottoms/base plate become convexed this one has its base plate is slightly convexed, this is proberbly why thay are no lnonger made i am going to change the spigot so it will be a standard 246B so it will be kinder for the tank and a standard mantle can be used as the 500 series mantle are hard to come by. here are a few pics of the 246B/500 series

Hi fox a great lantern to have in your collection you can get them on ebay newer models IE 320 ex MOD never been used or used but to untill last year they have stopped making them in Halifax yorkshire UK a company in south korea have taken them over and i have seen them retail new at just over £200 but there are plenty of used ones that are readaly available

    Brian

Whats that in the center of the priming cup??..around the generator?

Hi Fox it is a wick when spirit is poured into the cup it soaks it up, to be honest i prefer these primming cups over the tilley primming torch as it is far harder to loose and when the lantern is used in realy cold weather you can fill the cup and then wait for the wick to soak up the spirit and the top the cup up this realy does give a good flame and burns for a good while to rearly prime the lamp

Hi Fox congratulations on a first class restoration even though the tank originaly was painted removing the paint being as it was not in good condition was a good idea and polishing it it realy does do it justice it looks better polished up,these older lanterns look so much better not just in looks but in build quality

Hi here are some pics of one of my lanterns a bialaddin 315 this model was produced in the 1960's a realy nice well made solid lantern about 350CP these are a nice basic easy to operate and i like the preheater torch on these that slips over the vapouriser/generator tube.

This lantern is in the condition i purchased it i only changed the washers on the filler cap and it fired up a treat i have had this lantern now for a couple of years

Hi Fox I personaly have never used panel wipe but i am a member of spiritburner a forum very simular to this forum, a lot of the members on there use panel wipe in there coleman stoves and any petrol stoves like the primus71 etc and they say it works and performs the same so if the lantern is designed for unleaded petrol then panel wipe would work fine i only have a small selection of petrol fueled stoves so i have not used it ,just in case there is any confusion with panel wipe it has to be the solvent based and it is used to clean body work prior to spraying i would not try to use cellulose thiner.
i do believe panel wipe is naptha based like coleman fuel

Hi lampies i would personaly use the fuel the lantern was designed for bio fuel diesel i woluld take a lot longer in warming/primming and would not burn as good and would block the vapouriser/ generator with carbon a lot quicker

If the petromax is converted to use coleman fuel a lot of us collectors here in the Uk use panel wipe from motor factors or aspen4T which is a unleaded petrol with out any additives which is not as easy to buy but both products work well and is a lot cheaper than coleman fuel

Hi Janz Sven is 100% corect any stove lamp heater that uses benzine kerosene etc that is well maintained and in good working order and the fuel is clean and not contaminated will only give off odour when its is first lit or when it is turned off. These lamps are made for indoor use as well as outdoor use

Hi Gerald and thanks for your response i have checked the distance between the mixing tube and nipple with the tool supplied with the lantern and the nipple and cleaning needle was bran new supplied with the lantern but i will examine it tomorrow and may be order a few new nipples and needles many thanks gerald for your kind help
