Sorry,No No...I was not directing this thread directly for/at you. I was only interested in what you thought because of your experience with these lamps as mine is very limited...To put it in short I just though that the Vapalux mantle should be fitted the same as a tilley mantle so the mantle takes that mushroom shape as apposed to the other..I found when fitted like this the light output was far better...

Yes I agree..Doug, even a cheap mantle should burn correctly albeit not as bright...there are other issues here..As Jurgen said try replace the nozzle at the top of generator you should have a spare one in your kit...If the hole in the nozzle is a fraction over size it can/will cause flames at the mantle....be careful when screwing in the new nozzle not to bend the needle...Also make sure that the ceramic burner
screen ( Where mantle is tied on) and its holder are tight...maybe check for any imperfections here also....let us know how you get on .. If all this does not work it would be best to give this lantern to me

Rumors say, that even new Petromax-Lanterns sometimes come with poorly manufactured parts, like nozzles and rapid-burners...
My advice for you: Try a new nozzle from the spare-parts set, delivered with your lantern and check out what happens

I've been scratching my head over the the whole issue with Vapalux V Tilley mantles in terms of compatibility etc..The Vapalux mantle in my opinion is far to small when burnt and towards the end of the mantle it appears to narrow in a lot (even past the burner screen!!)..that to me is a big no no..Was never to happy with the performance from the Vapalux mantles so I changed to Petromax 500cp double whole ...an improvement, certainly, but still not right!..So nothing for it but to fit a tilley mantle and I fitted it as you would a tilley mantle and not the Vapalux way...The result is like chalk and cheese..SUPER BRIGHT with no dull spots

Brian I know you going to come back on this one ..interested to know what you think??

BTW...Do yourself a huge favor once you get her running ok....invest in Peerless mantles Heavy Duty (Blue Packet)...you will need welding goggles to look at the lantern!!..Super bright..

Remove vent...you will then see the top of the generator/vaporizer and the air intake tube just above that...the distance between both must be correct otherwise mucho problemo

In your tool kit you have a spanner/wrench...at one end you will see small markings 250/350/500...assuming yours is a 500cp you must use this marking to set the distance between both...simple operation..just slack the screw that keeps the air tube in position.. Note: the small screw you talked about that is visible when the vent is on is for fine tuning only..but it can make a huge difference to performance once adjusted..Try this first and report back

I do like the NOS lanterns but I like them all....I have lanterns that are in very used condition also

When possible I like to buy a lantern when it has the box and papers $$$$
I think the next time I should buy a lantern that needs lots of work as a project to keep me busy

Thanks for the tip...no decal transfer..Tilley stamp on tank....The bay pic was poor so just took a chance! ..date stamp reads 51260

Its a fine tilley for sure...even came with a little tilley dipstick ...If I wasnt bad enough with my Coleman habit I am now sucked into English Lanterns....In a whole pile of bother now!!!! Have been told I am missing the bug screen....I found a guy with one, its gold in color and in two parts it seems that is held together with a type of spring clip job....the correct one????

The 246 guardsman is the best of the 246 series if you do decide to fire her up you will agree and love this lantern, there usualy a date stamp at the bottom of the tank (the last two numbers of the serial number)indicates the date of manufacture looking at the lamps over on CPL tghis looks like it was made between 1954-57 has it got a decal transfer on the side of the tank or has it got the tilley logo and name stamped into the tank,once again fox well done there you realy have got a bargain and a brilliant lamp

This tilley arrived to me this morning is superb condition ...Bought on the bay for 20pounds...It was a bit of a lucky bag as the e bay pic was not the best....with very little cleaning it turned out like new!...the wick in the pre- heater has never been used and vent is in perfect condition...looks like all the paper work is there also..box is in pretty good shape too!!...Not sure about the date!?...Brian, hopefully you can advise on this??...

I wasn't aware that some of them were made in N. Ireland...until saw the stamp on box

the vent is pretty sharp too...and the box is like new....This one didnt spend anytime in a damp shed I'd say....have to say I'm very impressed with tilley....I'll order another one some time whe the Mrs is not looking!!
