Lamp/Lantern identification help

  • Hi Lorenzo,

Nope, Petromax was produced by Erich&Graetz in pre-War-Times in Berlin,
in post-War-times by Graetz in Altena(Germany) until the 1970ties

From there on it was sold under the name Geniol by Fa. Heinze in Wuppertal
    but produced in Portugal.

And under the License-name Santhrax produced in China.

Now it is produced under the name Petromax for Pelam LTD. but still in China.

Hope this helps, best regards, Björn

    M.ZUB IN AUF BEW-KASTEN
    GRAETZ KG,PETROMAX ALTENA/W

  • Altena was the City, Petromax produced lamps after WW2.

And its true, the other Lamp was propably been fittet with replacement-parts, later than the 1970ties..
In the Army, there was no interest to keep Lanternparts separated by model - it has to work, so parts were changes thrue... Me myself did this in the german Airforce.

In one Lampbox there had to be several spareparts/ replacementparts.

First the tools, needlescrewer, unitool and handneedle, than mantles, one funnel, led-seals, some nozzles and needles, one Ceramic-burner, one pump-leather, some Carburetor-seals and some pump- and rapid-seals.

This should have been all, I cannot tell exact numbers, but normally, there were three replacement-nozzles and fife mantles.

  • Hehe - you found the treasure :naughty:

This wire was topic in lots of german treads - in fact, nobody knows really, even old army personnel doesn't know whatfore it is.

The most possible purpose is, that in the mid-1950ies, the German army ordered the first Lamps and wanted to have a kind of shade that could be disassembled and placed along with the lantern inside the box - but then, when manufacturing of lamps and boxes started, didn't ordered the shade - but that box-design hadnt changed any more... so this wire-thing stayed.

Maybe someday this will be found out - or not :juggle:
